Rev 20:4-5
4 Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection.
NASUIf the meaning of this passage is according to the popular understanding that it describes only those who have gone through the great endtime tribulation, who were literally beheaded, who had not worshipped a person who is the beast, and/or not received a literal mark of the beast on their forehead or hand, then none of the apostles nor all of the numerous martyrs trouogh the centuries who were burned at the stake among other things, are eligible for the first resurrection.
This would be in direct contradition to scripture in the testimony of Paul who in his second letter to Timothy states that he has finished the race and has his crown before him. If the apostles such as Peter and Paul are eligible for the first resurrection, then our understanding may be in need of adjustment.
