"4179 Toutatis"
Hi John & All:
It was with great interest
I read Joe Hoyle's post on the approaching asteroid, which led me to check
out Gina McCray's link from the previous day.
Just to add a correction:
Due to the scale of
the java applet picture, the asteroid 4179 Toutatis appears to have its
orbit distorted in terms of how close it is to planet Earth, and on which
date.
If you check the pictures
I have included below, you will see that it's closest approach to Earth
will be on September 30th,
2004 -- which is the first day of the Feast
of Tabernacles.
With
a good sky map, a pair of 10 x 50 binoculars, the asteroid should be viewable.
Although don't expect to see much - it will only appear as a slowly moving
dot against the more distant background stars.
Note: 1 AU = 93 million
miles (approx.)
September 23, 2004 -- 0.0426 AU = 3,961,800
miles
...
September 29, 2004 -- 0.0109 AU = 1,013,700
miles
...
September 30, 2004 (Feast
of Tabernacles) -- 0.0108
AU = 1,004,400 miles
...
October 1, 2004 -- 0.014 AU = 1,302,000
miles
...See
ya in the air,
Eric
