 I believe that the phrase "we who are alive and remain" is referring to those who are alive and 'remain in Christ' because it is ONLY THE DEAD IN CHRIST that are being resurrected at the time of the rapture of the living who REMAIN IN CHRIST. Those who are alive but do not remain in Christ will not be raptured.
