We can't casually watch and dismiss the signs. We have to earnestly, soberly, carefully watch. The commands to watch aren't just for some Christians. All Christians are to occupy themselves with watching.
What good is the watchman if he doesn't take his job seriously? What good is the watchman if he sees the signs and doesn't tell anyone? Some churches have no watchmen. Some churches have blind watchmen. Some churches have foolish watchmen who dismiss what they see. Maybe some of the watchmen say to themselves, I'll be all right and so they think they don't have to bother raising an alarm for anyone else. What good are they doing?
What was the pupose of the watchman? It was to raise the alarm. To give warning before it was too late.
Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.
For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.
Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.
Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man
1 Thessalonians 5:6
Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
1 Peter 4:7
But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer
Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
