Looking Down The Barrel of The Deathstar

The title of the article and its opening read like the backdrop for a science fiction thriller but it's no joke.

Cosmos Magazine is reporting that a "spectacular, rotating binary star system is a ticking time bomb, ready to throw out a searing beam of high-energy gamma rays – and Earth may be right in the line of fire."

Inside the constellation Sagittarius lies a star known as a Wolf-Rayet, thought to be the final stage of stellar evolution to precede a cataclysmic supernova explosion.

Peter Tuthill, lead researcher of the team who reports its findings in the current Astrophysical Journal, is quoted in the article as saying, "When it finally explodes as a supernova, it could emit an intense beam of gamma rays coming our way."

Tuthill described some of the star system's features in a way that anyone who is familiar with looking down the barrel of a firearm can relate with. He stated, "If such a gamma-ray burst happens, we really do not want Earth to be in the way. I used to appreciate this spiral just for its beautiful form, but now I can't help a twinge of feeling that it is uncannily like looking down a rifle barrel."

While the article says we probably have a long time before the star system poses any threat, as one looks at a photo of the celestial cannon featured in the article, it is eerily like looking down the barrel of a firearm and observing its riflings.

Given what Bible prophecy tells us is going to occur in the last days, when wonders, fearful sights, and great signs shall come from heaven (Acts 2:19, Luke 21:11) eventually culminating in the powers of the heavens being shaken (Matthew 24:29), I think we'd do well to take note when members of the scientific community begin likening a star system in our galaxy to looking down a rifle barrel. After all, as we look at Bible prophecy, there is no question that what they're seeing is a harbinger of things to come. Thus sayeth the Lord!
