Hi all,I have been fighting the Senate and Congressional bills concerning putting cloned meat and milk (WITHOUT LABELING AS SUCH) into our food supply. The FDA unfortunately approved them last year, but recently a bill was put into committee to try to force labeling.I find this whole discussion morally repugnant anyway, but unfortunately moral, ethical and religious objections are not being considered at this juncture, at least as far as the FDA is concerned. I will tell you they are being heavily lobbied by the companies producing the clones and clone semen and eggs to NOT label the products, knowing that the public will not purchase them due to moral, ethical reasons. This same thing happened when they introduced Genetically Modified Foods into our grocery stores with labels. Few sold, so the FDA was lobbied until the labels were removed.Anyway, I accidentally ran across this site, and to my horror I discovered all the name-brand, supposedly "normal" food we feed our families are ALL genetically engineered! With all the advanced technology in our modern world, wouldn't you think we'd all be a lot healthier than people 50-100 years ago? I mean, we trust the government to protect us, don't we? The truth is our society is sicker than ever, and diseases run rampant like diabetes, allergies, heart problems, obesity, cancer, fibromyalgia, Alzheimer's, etc. Let's see, then we spend money for expensive health insurance, and at the doctor's office, get tests, surgery and hospital bills, and prescriptions for drugs (that end up in our quickly shrinking water supply). So, many industries profit from us just trying to feed our families, the natural resources become polluted, and we get sicker! Suddenly, paying a little more upfront at Whole Foods looks to save all the expense of these many illness, and seems like discount bargain-shopping!Check this out!I found it interesting that the reply from my DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSMAN, IN HIS LETTER DATED FEB 14, 2008, STATED THE FOLLOWING, after giving me the address for the FDA and urging me to comment to them: Comments must be received by Apr 2, 2007!!! P.S. I did NOT vote for this idiot Congressman!!! Can you believe his letter???BUT DO WRITE YOUR CONGRESSMAN AND SENATOR BECAUSE ALTHOUGH WE HAVE ALREADY LOST THE BATTLE--cloned meat and milk were approved "safe" by FDA, and are UNLABELED--please ask them to vote FOR the CLONED FOOD LABELING ACT TO AMEND THE FEDERAL FOOD, DRUG AND COSMETIC ACT AND FED MEAT INSPECTION ACT TO BE LABELED ACCORDINGLY. H.R. 992 HAS BEEN REFERRED TO THE HOUSE COMMITTEES ON AGRICULTURE AND ENERGY AND COMMERCE. (Senate Bill) S.414 HAS BEEN REFERRED TO THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON HEALTH, EDUCATION, LABOR AND PENSIONS.One more thing...it costs these guys $13,000 to clone one bull, when a naturally bred bull cost $1,000. One lobbyist argued that his client had spent from $80,000-100,000 already working on building a herd. Makes no sense, right? Well, what they are doing is creating these clones from "superior" bulls, then are selling the semen. One company had already collected 160,000 units, and I don't even want to know what units they are referring to. Then they clone the females to produce their clones strickly for breeding stock. As a former dog breeder, who was heavy into the genetics, I can tell you the first thing they are doing is shrinking the gene pool considerably. When you do that, you develop inbred progeny, and by the second generation you've got big problems. Funny how those long-asleep recessive genes come to the front as dominant genes in one generation. It's a tricky business, and in greedy corporate hands who think of only profit, it's scary what frankenmeats we could actually be dealing with in two short years, not to mention the slaughtered cows now too sick to stand at the slaughterhouse, and the high percentage (90% I read) of chickens in corporate farms with cancer!God Bless and help us all,Kay
