"Part Two - The 144,000"

Part Two – The 144,000

                                                                       By Pastor F. M. Riley

Text:    Revelation 7:1-8   14:1-5.

Introduction

In my previous Bible study on this subject, “The Salvation, Sealing, and Ministry of the 144,000,” I pointed out that the salvation of Saul of Tarsus, and his life and ministry that followed as the Apostle Paul, was a “pattern” of those who “should hereafter believe on Him to life everlasting,” 1 Timothy 1:16.  The fulfillment of this “pattern” [type] will include all of the believing Jewish remnant, but especially the 144,000 spiritual leaders of the Jewish people.  And now we turn our attention specifically to…..

The 144,000

Who are the 144,000 of Revelation 7:1-8 and 14:1-5?  They are 144,000 natural born Jews!  Period!
They are Jews saved and sealed, 12,000 out of each of the twelve tribes of Israel clearly named in Revelation 7:4-8.  This explicit statement in God’s Word should totally settle the matter for every one.  But sadly, some folks either can’t read, or don’t want to believe what they read.
There are numerous “religionists” today who are trying to steal what rightfully belongs only to Israel and the Jewish people by claiming that they are the 144,000, or that the 144,000 are the bride of Christ, or that the 144,000 are the only people who will be raptured to Heaven, or that they are the only people involved in the “first fruits” resurrection, or that they are blah, blah, blah, blah, ad nauseum!
Hogwash!  How could it be stated more explicitly than the inspired Word has stated it?  These 144,000 are Jews!  “And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed a hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel,” Revelation 7:4.
But some today object to this explicit statement in God’s Word by claiming, “All New Testament believers are spiritual Jews.”  They use such a silly claim to justify their false teaching about the 144,000.  Double hogwash!!  Barf!  Barf!

Are New Testament Believers Spiritual Jews?

With the rise of apostasy in the ranks of Christianity today, such a false claim has become very popular.  Folks, the popularity of a teaching does not make it Scriptural  truth.  Whether some like it or not, Luke 16:15 is still in the Bible.  Read it and find out what the Lord Himself had to say about that which is “popular” with men.
If the context of the Book of Romans is faithfully adhered to, it is impossible to use Romans 2:28-29 to teach that a repentant Gentile believer becomes a spiritual Jew when they receive Christ as Savior.  I demonstrate…..
In Romans 1:1 through 2:16 the Gentiles are being discussed.  In Romans 2:17 through 3:8 the Jewish people are being discussed.  Check this out for yourself.  Then in Romans 3:9, the inspired conclusion regarding both Jews and Gentiles is set forth.  “What then? are we better than they?  No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin.”  It is then obvious that in Romans 2:28-29, the inspired Apostle was speaking directly to the Jews and about the Jews.  This isn’t hard for anyone to see and understand who seriously studies these passages, and who wants to deal honestly with the Scriptures.  Romans 2:28-29 has nothing at all to do with the Gentiles, and in no way does it teach that a Gentile becomes a spiritual Jew when they receive Christ as Savior.  Sic!
This same truth is set forth in Galatians 3:7-9.  The context clearly indicates that Gentile believers are “children of Abraham” by faith.  In other words, we exercised the same faith that was exercised by Abraham when he “believed on the Lord.” .  We Gentile believers have no fleshly connection with Abraham in any way.  We did not descend from Abraham.  No where do these Scriptures state, teach, suggest, or imply that Gentile believers become spiritual Jews [or spiritual Israelites] when they receive Christ.
In order for one to become a spiritual Jew, a person first has to be born a Jew.  Then that person would have to receive Christ as their own personal Savior, and live for Him and serve Him.  Then and only then would that natural born Jew become a spiritual Jew.  No natural born Gentile can ever qualify for this position. Period!
I reprove these misguided “religionists” today who have been deceived, and are deceiving others, by this false teaching.  Keep your hands off of those things which God gave exclusively to the Jewish people.  Gentiles are not and will never become spiritual Jews.  Such a false teaching is blatant heresy, and is only a wicked attempt by some “religionists” to steal those things which rightfully belong only to the Jewish people.  Such “religionists” need to make a serious effort to learn how to “rightly divide the Word of truth,” 2 Timothy 2:15; 1 Corinthians 10:32.
It is then glaringly obvious that New Testament Gentile believers are not spiritual Jews, and never will be.  It is also obvious that the 144,000 in Revelation 7:4-8 are exactly who the Lord says they are; Jews, natural born Jews, and only Jews.

A Select Group of Jews

The 144,000 are also a select group of Jews.
Today there are approximately fifteen million known Jews in the whole world.  Very few of them, if any, have even the remotest idea of their tribal identity.  Most Jews living today have forgotten, lost, or given up any knowledge of which tribe in Israel they have descended from.  But the Lord still knows!
Some Jews living today have renounced Judaism, preferring to assimilate into the Gentile nation and people among whom they live.  But there are “religious” Jews who still attend synagogue, observe the Holy Days, study the Torah, and adhere to the teachings of their Rabbis.  Almost anywhere in the world where there is a group of Jews, there will also be a Jewish Rabbi.  The Rabbis are the present day spiritual leaders of the Jewish people.  And here is where you will find the identity of the 144,000 of Revelation 7:4-8.
The 144,000 are the spiritual leaders of the Jewish people.  They are the Jewish Rabbis, and perhaps other Jewish religious leaders, who are today so vehemently opposed to Jesus Christ and Christianity.  The Lord is going to display His “longsuffering,” 1 Timothy 1:16, and His “everlasting love,” Jeremiah 31:1-3, by saving these spiritual leaders of the Jewish people, who just like Saul of Tarsus was, are today the Lord’s most bitter enemies, 1 Timothy 1:15.  Glory!  Praise the Lord!
I am aware that some readers may be thinking, “Impossible!”  “A sill theory!”  “Far fetched!” “It will never happen!”  But while you are scoffing, let’s just study a little more of God’s Word…..

The Salvation of the 144,000

It never seems to register on some people that these 144,000 are living human beings, and since “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:23, they need to be saved just like all lost sinners.  How will this occur?  The 144,000 will be saved just like Saul of Tarsus was saved, and like all repentant sinners are saved.  Almighty God has never had but one way of salvation…..

“For by grace are ye saved, through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast,” Ephesians 2:8-9.

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God,” Romans 10:17.

“But what saith it?  The Word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the Word of faith, which we preach;  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation,” Romans 10:8-10.

The 144,000 are going to be saved by hearing the gospel, believing it, and receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as their own personal Savior.  But how is this possible?  The Scripture says, “How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed?  and how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard?  and how shall they hear without a preacher?”  Romans 10:14.
The answer to these questions is quite simple.  Most of the Jewish Rabbis living today are well acquainted with the gospel of Christ.  In other words, they have already heard the gospel, for they have studied the New Testament in order to oppose and combat the gospel.  They don’t want the Jewish people to turn away from Judaism.  So most Jewish Rabbis, even though stubbornly refusing to believe the gospel, have already heard the gospel for themselves.  Therefore, all that is needed now is “a preacher” able to convince them that the gospel of Christ is really true.  Where are they going to find such a preacher?
Remember that Christ appeared to Saul of Tarsus face to face.  Paul plainly stated that he was “a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on Him to life everlasting.”  In Ezekiel 20:35, Zechariah 12:10 and 13:6, it is clearly predicted that the Lord Jesus Christ is going to reveal Himself to the Jews by appearing to them face to face.  Who then is going to be the “preacher” that will be able to convince the 144,000 spiritual leaders of the Jewish people that the gospel of Christ is true?  Folks, the Lord Jesus Christ Himself is going to preach to these 144,000 spiritual leaders of Israel, as He appears to them face to face, just as He appeared to Saul on the road to Damascus.  Glory! Hallelujah!  Praise the Lord!

What will Christ preach to the 144,000?

In Luke 4:16-30 Christ returned to Nazareth, where He had been brought up as a child.  On that occasion He entered the synagogue and read from Isaiah 61:1-2.  He did not read those verses verbatim, but rather transliterated them.  Compare Isaiah 61:1-2 with Luke 4:18-19 and notice the difference in the wording of the two passages.  In Luke 4:18 the Lord added the statement, “recovering of sight to the blind,” and “to set at liberty them that are bruised.”  These two statements are not in the Isaiah passage.  These additions by the Lord are highly significant.
During the personal ministry of Christ, the Lord did indeed “preach the gospel to the poor.”  He also healed “the broken hearted.”  After His crucifixion He also “descended first into the lower parts of the earth,” Ephesians 4:9, where He preached “deliverance to the captives.”  See 1 Peter 3:18-19, Isaiah 42:6-7 and 49:9.  During His personal ministry He restored the sight of some individuals who were physically blind, but there is no record in the Scriptures of Christ actually preaching “recovering of sight to the blind” to Israel or to their spiritual leaders.  There is also no record of Christ setting “at liberty them that are bruised.”  These two events mentioned in Luke 4:18 are yet to be fulfilled. We know they haven’t been fulfilled, for long after Christ had ascended back to the Father, the inspired Apostle explicitly stated that national Israel is still spiritually blind.  See Romans 11:7, 11:25, and 2 Corinthians 3:14-15.
Since it is obvious that Christ fulfilled all of Luke 4:18 except the latter two events, then it is reasonable to believe that He will also fulfill those two events.  Amen!
The spiritual leaders of Israel, and through them the nation, had already been judicially blinded over 800 years prior to the first coming of Christ.  They will remain in this state until their blindness is removed from their stubborn hearts by Christ Himself as He appears to them face to face, just as He appeared to Saul of Tarsus.  Saul was one of Israel’s spiritual leaders, and wasborn before the “appointed time,” as a “pattern” for all of these 144,000 spiritual leaders of Israel.
When the Lord Himself appears to them, just as he appeared to Saul, He will then open their understanding, Luke 24:45, preaching to them “recovering of sight to the blind,” and will identify Himself to them just as He identified Himself to Saul so long ago.  Can our readers not visualize the fear, the amazement, the sorrow, and the faith that will rise up in their hearts at that time?  They will immediately cry out, “Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord,” Matthew 23:39.  At that moment 144,000 spiritual leaders of Israel will be saved, just as their “pattern,” Saul of Tarsus, was saved so many centuries ago.  Glory!  Praise the Lord!  Glory to God!

How will the 144,000 be Sealed?

The 144,000 will be sealed like all of God’s people are sealed, with one exception.  That exception is that their sealing will be visible to everyone.  Every true believer is sealed!  See Ezekiel 9:4-6, Romans 4:8-12, 2 Corinthians 1:21-22, Ephesians 1:13, 4:30, and 2 Timothy 2:19.  True believers today are sealed, but no one can see the “seal” that has been placed upon us except the Lord.  But the seal set in the forehead of the 144,000 will be visible to everyone, publicly identifying them as “the servants of God,” Revelation 7:3. Their “sealing” will make them stand out in stark contrast to the wicked servants of the Antichrist, who will also be sealed with a visible mark.
The Scriptures do not tell us what the seal in the foreheads of the 144,000 will look like.  We are only told that it will be the “Father’s name,” Revelation 14:1.  Glory to God!  What a seal!  Their “seal” will place them under the direct protection of the Lord until their ministry is completed.

When will the 144,000 be Sealed?

The Scriptures explicitly state that the 144,000 will be saved and sealed before the “four angels” are allowed to “hurt the earth and the sea,” Revelation 7:1-3.  This places the salvation and sealing of the 144,000 right at the beginning of the Tribulation. In other words, just after the Dispensation of Grace has ended with the rapture of New Testament believers to glory, the seven year Tribulation will begin on the earth.  Before any of the judgments predicted to occur during the Tribulation have been poured out, the
salvation and sealing of the 144,000 will occur.  The 144,000 are the very first people saved and sealed during the Tribulation, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb,” Revelation 14:4.
In Micah 7:15-17 the Scriptures say,  “According to the days of thy coming out of the land of Egypt will I show unto him marvelous things.”  This statement was made  hundreds of years after the Israelites had come out of Egypt.  Therefore it is obvious that the statement is a prophecy, and since it was not fulfilled in the days of Micah [or since], it obviously is still awaiting fulfillment.  When will it be fulfilled?
In ancient Egypt there were ten days of judgments poured out upon the Egyptians.  Before the 10th day was completed Egypt was plunged into total darkness, which lasted for three days, Exodus 5:1 - 10:21-23.
In 1 Corinthians 10:1-11 it is twice stated that Israel’s deliverance from Egypt was for “examples” [types…verse 6; verse 11] for God’s people living today.  This is very interesting in view of the Lord Himself telling His church at Smyrna, “Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days; be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”  I am well aware that most “scholars” relate this verse to the ten great persecutions that came upon Christianity at the hands of the Roman Empire.  But what if the “scholars” are wrong?  In studying Christian history, I have personally never found a literal ten day period of persecution that correlates with this passage.  Is it possible that this passage is yet to be fulfilled?  Think about it!
Is it possible that just preceding the rapture of God’s people, and the beginning of the Tribulation, there will be ten days of bitter persecution against Christians throughout the world?  And then half way through the 10th day, the entire world will be plunged into total darkness for three days?  Is this possible?  I don’t know!  I not being dogmatic on this at all.  I see it as a possibility, for ancient Egypt was certainly a type of the world.   I can see that such a scenario would correlate perfectly with some prophecies in God’s Word which are to be fulfilled as this present dispensation ends and the Tribulation begins.
Twice in the prophetic Scriptures we are explicitly told that “the day of the Lord [the Tribulation] so cometh as a thief in the night,” 1 Thessalonians 5:2; 2 Peter 3:10.  Five more times we are told that the Lord is coming as thief, Matthew 24:43; Luke 12:39; 1 Thessalonians 5:4; Revelation 3:3; 16:15.  If there should occur ten days of bitter persecution against Christians, with the whole world plunged into darkness at noon [Amos 8:9]on the 10th day, and then the Lord coming in that darkness to rapture His people to glory, would it not fulfill these Scriptures to the letter?  Think about it!
If such a scenario should develop, then God’s people [true believers] would indeed be removed from this world in a secret rapture, for in the pitch darkness no lost person would even know that God’s people had been caught up to meet the Lord. In fact, lost mankind upon the earth would not even be aware that the Lord had come, that they had been left behind, and that they were now in the terrible Tribulation period, until the light of the Sun begin to shine again after three days of total darkness upon the earth.
Now how does this scenario fit into the salvation and sealing of the 144,000?  I think it would fit quite well.

A Possible Sequence

The Scriptures do explicitly say that the “days of thy coming out of the land of Egypt” are to be repeated, Micah 7:15-17.  A repetition of these days is not in question at all.  It is going to happen.
The first of those days were ten days of judgments upon Egypt.  Sometime on the 10th day the whole land of Egypt was instantly plunged into total darkness.  A repetition of this, on a world wide scale, could easily be caused by a sudden pole shift of the earth on its axis, plus the many massive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that would occur during and after such a shift.
I would suggest that this darkness would likely envelope Jerusalem, Israel that 10th day precisely at noon, Amos 8:9.  That was the exact time that the Lord appeared to Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus, Acts 26:13.  [It was also the time when darkness suddenly covered all the earth when our Lord was being crucified, Luke 23:44].
Sometime after the earth is plunged into total darkness, but before the day ends at 6 p.m. [Jewish reckoning], the Lord suddenly appears in that darkness in all His glory to all true believers, and receives them to Himself in exact fulfillment of John 14:1-3, 1 Corinthians 15:51-55, Philippians 3:20-21, Colossians 3:4, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, 2 Timothy 4:8, and 1 John 3:2-3. The Lord then will literally come for His people as “a thief in the night,” Revelation 16:15.  Glory!  Praise the Lord!  Hallelujah!
Then just as the 11th day begins, or shortly thereafter, the Lord will suddenly appear in His glory to 144,000 Jews, most or all of whom will be Rabbis, the spiritual leaders of Israel and the Jewish people.  When He appears to them, He will proclaim “recovering of sight” to them, showing them the nail prints in His hands and the scar in His side.  They will react exactly as Saul of Tarsus [their “pattern”] did, by crying out, “Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?” Acts 9:6.  And just as Thomas [another type] cried out so long ago, “My Lord and my God,” John 20:28.  Right then and there those 144,000 spiritual leaders of the Jewish people will be saved and sealed by the wonderful grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Glory!  Hallelujah!  But if the type set in Egypt holds true, the whole world will remain in pitch darkness until sometime on the 13th day, completing 72 hours of total darkness.
I want my readers to clearly understand that I have labeled this one portion of this Bible study as a possible sequence.  I am in no way dogmatically declaring that the events mentioned in this one portion will occur in this exact manner.  What has been presented in this portion is simply things to motivate my readers to study and think about for yourself.  However, I do believe that the Tribulation is going to begin with three days of darkness over the whole earth.

The Ministry of the 144,000

But after three days of total darkness over all the earth, light will suddenly be restored to humanity left upon the earth.  That day a lost, Christ rejecting humanity, will emerge from the darkness to find themselves in the terrible Tribulation.  And strange things; supernatural things, begin to happen.
Following those three days of darkness, two strange looking men will appear in the streets of Jerusalem, boldly preaching “the gospel of the kingdom,” Matthew 24:14.  These two men will be God’s “two witnesses,” Revelation 11:3-12.  They will be rebuking sin and wickedness, pointing fingers, naming names, demanding repentance, and lifting up the Lord Jesus Christ as the only way of salvation, with a dedication and zeal never previously seen by modern mankind.  And no one…..not the police, not the civil authorities, not the military, not the Israeli government, not the U.N. or E.U., nor anyone in the whole world will be able to stop these “two prophets” from preaching, or harm them in any way.  Anyone even attempting to do so will instantly be reduced to ashes in full view of the television cameras of the world news media, Revelation 11:5. .  Glory to God!  Hallelujah!  Praise the Lord!
The 144,000 saved and sealed spiritual leaders of Israel will work hand in hand with the Lord’s “two witnesses” to evangelize the whole world during the first half of the Tribulation.  May I remind our readers that Saul of Tarsus [the Apostle Paul] was used of the Lord to evangelize the whole known world of his day in approximately 40 years.  These 144,000, like their “pattern” before them, are going to evangelize the whole world in just 3 ½ years. The 144,000 will take the gospel of Christ to every place on earth where there is a soul to hear it.  Contrary to popular teaching today, that the whole world has heard the gospel, it is the 144,000 who are going to have the honor of fulfilling Matthew 24:14.  Compare Joel 2:32.
During that time the Jewish Temple will be rebuilt and dedicated, and the ancient worship of the Jews will be restored. Judaism is not the ancient worship that God gave to Israel by Moses, but is rather a wicked corruption of that ancient worship.
While the 144,000 are carrying the gospel throughout the entire “habitable” earth, the “two witnesses” will be preaching in the city of Jerusalem.  Their ministry will be an international world wide ministry, even though it appears that they never leave the city of Jerusalem. This will be because the television cameras of the world will carry every word they preach to the far corners of the earth, Revelation 11:9-10.
During the first half of the Tribulation, as the 144,000 and the “two witnesses” minister the gospel, millions from “all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues,” will receive Christ as Savior, Revelation 7:9-17.  Glory to God!  Praise the Lord!

A Completed Ministry and a Glorious Victory

When the ministry of the “two witnesses” and the 144,000 is completed, the special protection given them for their ministry will be removed, and the Antichrist and his followers will be permitted by God to kill them.  See Daniel 7:21 and 7:25, and Psalm 79:1-3.  This appears to be a terrible thing for those who will have so faithfully served the Lord during the first half of the Tribulation.  But never forget that the Lord knows what He is doing, and has a higher purpose for the life of every one of His children.
The Scripture specifically tells us that the dead bodies of the “two witnesses,” hated and despised by the wicked of the world, will be placed on display in the streets of Jerusalem, Revelation 11:8-10. The wicked of the world will “rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another,” Revelation 11:10.  But don’t forget, “the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment,” Job 20:5.
Suddenly, after “three days and a half” the dead bodies of the “two witnesses” will be resurrected back to life in full view of the whole world via TV.  While their enemies watch, they will ascend “up to heaven in a cloud,” Revelation 11:12.  Glory!  Praise the Lord!  The death of these saints [Psalm 116:15] at the hands of the wicked, though tragic indeed, will be turned by the Lord into one of the greatest witnesses for Christ that the world has ever seen.  This event will literally turn the hearts of the Jewish remnant back to the Lord, for we read in verse 13, “And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.” Glory to God!  Praise the Lord!  Hallelujah!  The God we serve is the One who is able to make “all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose,” Romans 8:28.  Lift up your voice and give praise to the Lord!
But what happens to the 144,000 at this time?  It does appear from Daniel 7:21 and 7:25 that they too are slain when the “two witnesses” are slain.  So what happens to them?
In Revelation 14:1-5 the 144,000 are on Mt Zion in Heaven right after the middle of the Tribulation.  They are with “the Lamb,” standing before the Father’s throne.  As they stand before the throne, they begin singing “a new song” which “no man could learn…..but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.” Two things here….  Every time in their history that God gave Israel a great

victory, they broke out into a victory song.  There isn’t the slightest doubt in my mind that this song being sung by the 144,000 is their victory song.  Then this also suggests to me that these 144,000 are resurrected to life and caught up [raptured] to glory at the same time as the “two witnesses.”  I am not dogmatic on this point, and I am not going to argue about it with anyone.  None of us have all of the answers yet.  It just seems reasonable to me.

Conclusion

Folks, I stated the purpose for this study in our introduction to the first article, “The Salvation, Sealing, and Ministry of the 144,000.” .  I leave it up to you, my readers, to decide if I have done justice to the subject.
I want to remind our readers in closing that the fulfillment of these events is right at the door.  It is my fervent desire that God’s people [true believers] living today confess and put away their known sins, put off the things of the flesh and the world, seriously study God’s Word, pray regularly and fervently, and seek to draw closer to the Lord than ever before in our lives. At any moment now we are going to be ushered into the very presence of our Lord by the rapture.  My earnest desire for God’s people is that we can all meet Him “as a chaste virgin,” 2 Corinthians 11:2; a bride prepared for her Heavenly Bridegroom, rather than having to “be ashamed before Him at His coming,” 1 John 2:28.
It is also my fervent desire to warn those lost people who do have a heart that is hungry for God’s righteousness, Matthew 5:6, that your time to be saved is running out. Don’t “neglect” the Lord’s offer of salvation any longer, Hebrews 2:3.  Seek the Lord today!  Right now!  God’s Word says, “behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation,” 2 Corinthians 6:2.  I urge you; yea, I plead with you, turn right now from self and from sin and cry out for the Lord to extend His mercy to you.  Confess to God  your lost, sinful condition, and plead the blood of His own dear Son as your only hope of salvation, John 14:6; Acts 4:12.  Ask the Lord to come into your heart and save you and be the Lord of your life.  The Lord is coming very soon.  You may have only days left to get things right between you and the Lord.  Won’t you take advantage of the opportunity the Lord is giving you, and seek Him today as your own personal Savior?
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever [that’s you lost friend] believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life,” John 3:16.
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house,” Acts  16:31.
