Matt (9 March 2007)
"Sabbath... why Christians don't have to worry about observing this day (or any other Jewish legalism)"

Jesus made the most remarkable statement to the Jews that were upset with his disciples for not observing the Sabbath day - Each Evangelist adds a little bit of detail, so here are all three accounts:

Matthew 12: 3-7
But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;
How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

Luke 6:1-5
And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.
And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?
And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;
How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?
And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Mark 2:25-28
And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?
How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

The only ones allowed to run red lights are police officers and ambulances!!
The law of signal lights is binding, but not on them when they are doing their various duties for the community.

This is exactly what Jesus is saying: As the King and the High Priest, he is ABOVE the Sabbath law!! He gives the example of King David (while on the Kings business he lawfully ate the priest's holy showbread on the Sabbath day) and the temple Priests (who always "work" their various temple jobs on the Sabbath day).

Further, Jesus extends the franchise of Sabbath day exception to "them which were with him" - those would be us!!

We (the body of Christ only) are working as Kings and Priests for the High King of Glory, our Great Sovereign King and the most High Priest - 7 days a week, 24 hours a day !!! We are completely exempt from taking any days off.

The Body of Christ is the Bride of Christ, and special. We are composed of FORMER "Jews and Gentiles" - but are now separate from those two groups. We did not "become Jews" - we became SAVED! Jacob, Moses, the Prophets, and all the "Jews" were not saved the way we have been, and they are not part of the "Bride of Christ" - we are special.

Therefore it is a special thing that we don't have to observe these commandments - and that confuses everybody who wants to find some sort of universal application of everything written in the Bible to everybody at all time. That's not how it works - we must "rightly divide" the Bible.

In the future the Jews of the tribulation and millennium must obey the Sabbath. That is why, for example, Jesus said "pray that your flight be not ... on the Sabbath day" - those are tribulation Jews he is speaking to! So Nothing in the Law has been done away with permanently. According to Ezekiel, even animal sacrifices will commence during the millennium (which is very confusing, unless you get what we are talking about here!).

To make matters more confusing, Paul gave the commandments in Romans 13:9 and elsewhere that include only 9 or the 10 commandments, leaving out the Sabbath observance!! So we can say that our unredeemed Gentile BODIES are subject to the commandments - and breaking them by following the lusts of the flesh will cause us condemnation in this life (only). Our saved souls and born-again spirits are not subject to any law - since they are born of God and can no longer sin at all!! (See 1 John 3:9 "Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.")

All the Christian's sinning in this life is done by his old-man nature, and that flesh is considered "dead" - crucified with Christ. However, the flesh we are in "didn't get the memo" about it being dead! He still thinks he's alive and kicking, and so he keeps giving us trouble. We need to not heed the flesh - and walk in the spirit, not doing "errands for a corpse" by sinning.

Sins will affect our present earthly life, making it miserable, joyless, and earning it chastisement - and eventually God will kill the wayward Christian who keeps sinning ("For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die" Romans 8:13) but eternal life is not going to be lost (but eternal  inherietance of rewards in the kingdom of God will be lost by sinning now - see Galatians 5:21 with Colossians 3:24 "Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance").

What about the "Jew's religion"? Paul said that he, "profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers." "But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.... and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,"

The Today's Street-Lingo Version (TSLV) translates "dung" as a certain four letter word I won't repeat here!

Would a bride throw away her wedding ring? Would she ignore her husband and leave home with the cleaning-crew? I trow not. We are the bride, enjoy the freedom (and responsibility) that Christ purchased us with his blood at a very high price. Be not enslaved again.

We have a Bible that tells us God's name: and it says that it is JEHOVAH. To write "Yahweh" is to scorn the English language Bible (King James) that God has given us and to adopt a presumptuous pronunciation that even the Jews admit is unknown. This much is certain, a V is now pronounced "W" in English. The mistaken "W" in "Yahweh" is the result of English theologians in the ninteenth century reading materials written by the German higher-critical school (noted for infidelity to God's word and liberalism). In Germany "W" is prounced as the English V. So when certain of these Englishmen carried forward the German spelling into their English writings, the confusion that ensued as to proper pronunciation had a "life of its own" to this very day. So many people actually think "Yahweh" is correct - but it's all a big mistake. A soft "J" at the beginning of the word (spelled "Y") is a legitimate alternative way to say it, and that's how Jehovah is pronounced in other languages like Spanish. But I say, if you speak English go with the King James and you won't go wrong.
