Shortly after I had the drawing of azazel published, I decided to send it to
Ruth Montgomery, a leading psychic of 20 years ago. I did not hear back for
quite a while and then one day I received a letter telling me that she loved
the drawing (no surprise now duh! huh!) and I was so elated that she liked it
and even wrote me back. Since I was in Phoenix, she told me to look up some
friends of hers. They were Anne and Herb Puryear. Anne, it turned out was a
famous psychic and her husband Herb was director of LOGOS, a new age spinoff
of Edgar Cayce's Association of Research and Enlightenment group in Virginia
Beach. I had been introduced to Cayce's writings in college nearly twenty
years earlier. I had read all of his books and even attended one of their
conventions in Chicago a decade later while I was in grad school. Now I was
reintroduced to his cosmic consciousness, reincarnation based, new age
gobbledygook and I loved it.
They were so surprised when I showed at the door of Logos and told them that
Ruth Montgomery had sent me. They smiled and told me that they knew I would
come. Yeah right? Anne did a life reading of me and my auras while in a
meditative state. She told me that I was on old soul and was very advanced
spiritually -an avatar. I later asked her if she said that because she had
charged me $125 and wanted to make me feel good. I was Jewish you know!
She said no, it was all true. I was a very special person sent to them by the
spirit guides of this world. I was a little skeptical(my mama didn't raise no
fool) but It felt good to be so praised by these people. Herb wanted me to
teach Kaballah in his soon to be formed metaphysical university. I began
attending there Wednesday night prayer/meditation sessions and that lasted for
over a year. I also jhad been introduced to an astrologer who had also told me
that I had the best chart since Ghandhi. Satan was stroking my ego.
Then in the fall of 1987 I found myself working for Christians including my
present wife Paula who kept telling me to forgo such delusions. One day early
on, Philip was trying to tell me about Jesus. I had responded that I was an
old soul and had once walked with the prophet myself. He had laughed. I then
had told him that I had a life reading that proved it. He asked to see it. I
handed it to him hoping that he would take it home and listen to it but
instead he had begun to pull, the tape out of the cassette all over the floor.
I had screamed that it had cost me $125 (Jewish response). As I have said
before, Philip had been a Marine and then a numbers runner before he came to
the Lord and could have wiped the floor with me. I boiled inside but did
nothing but lament my loss and vow to get another copy.
A year later, I had accepted the Lord and lost contact with the Puryears. Then
another 18 months later Paula and I got married (another example of God's
amazing grace towards this lost and perishing sinner). The first week that we
were married I received a phone call from Herb Puryear. How he found my phone
number because I had moved into Paula's house, is a mystery- Satan was still
after me? He had told me that he had finally set up his metaphysical
university and he still wanted me to teach Jewish mysticism. When I had told
him that we no longer had anything in common, he was puzzled. I then told him
that I had accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. He was speechless and
said goodbye and hung up.
