Many of you readers responded to the series of messages about prayer (links below). Your number 1 question is about praying without ceasing. Well, you cannot pray without ceasing. None of us can. We must work, eat, sleep, and we should read The Bible, visit the sick, etc. It is impossible for us to pray without ceasing. So is The Bible wrong? No, but our English translations are not accurate. Let’s look at the verses and learn.
Acts 12:5 A few translations say “without ceasing,“ but most say “…but fervent prayer for him was persistently made to God…”(Amplified) or “…being made fervently…”(NAS) or "…earnestly praying…”(NIV). Fervent is a translation of the Greek word ketenes, ek-ten-ace’ which also means intense. In today’s American English we would say: “Intense prayer.” “Without ceasing” is wrong. The real Bible is correct. Translations which say “fervent” are correct.
Romans 1:9 in the real Bible uses the Greek word ad-ee-al’-ipe-toce which means uninterruptedly or without omission. Paul was saying “I never forget to mention you in my prayers.” Without ceasing is wrong. The real Bible is correct.
1Thessalonians 1:3 “Remembering without ceasing…” Impossible! You cannot think the same thought for very long. It is the same word as in Romans 1:9. How about “We don’t forget…” or “We never forget…” both meaning “without omission” which is what ad-ee-al’-ipe’toce means, but without ceasing is wrong.
1Thessalonians 2:13- 89- same Greek word, not “without ceasing”
1Thessalonians 5:17- 89- same Greek word, not “without ceasing”
This last verse is only three words: “Pray without ceasing.” This should be very clear, but it is wrong. You cannot do that. You can do what the Greek words in the actual Bible say.
ek-ten-ace = intense = You should pray with intensity, concentration, strongly, with deep emotion of thought.
ad-ee-al’-ipe-toce = uninterrupted = You should pray without distractions, with enough time to not hurry, etc.
ad-ee-al’-ipe-toce = without omission = You should pray without forgetting things important to God; at least once each day for someone sick or injured, every time for HOLY SPIRIT to save people - think priorities and pray that way.
