Introducing The Hebrew Letter Tzaddi
The tzaddi is the eighteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, with a numerical value of 90. It has the appearance of a man on his knees, with his hands raised in praise to God. It is the symbol of righteousness and humility. It is often pronounced tzaddik, as if the next letter koph, should be a part of it. Together, the two letters refer to a righteous man. There are two forms for the tzaddi — the bent form symbolizes the humility of the righteous in this life. It is used when the letter appears at the beginning or within a word. The straight tzaddi represents the exaltation of the righteous in the world to come. At that time, the righteous will stand before God.
Rabbi Michael Munk explained that the letter represents God, who is the only truly righteous one. Man’s righteousness is only a reflection of God’s righteousness.
