Single Driving License For EU Citizens By 2012

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - A new common driving licence for the EU was approved by transport ministers on Monday (27 March) in a bid to fight fraud and raise road safety across the 25-member bloc.

The new driving licence is to be implemented by member states by 2012 at the latest, and will replace the 110 EU driving licence systems in place today – including one dating from the German Democratic Republic, which reunited with Germany in 1989.

The new document will have the form of a credit card with a regularly updated photo and some anti-falsification measures - possibly a microchip.

Britain Signs Up Licenses For All Of To Driving The EU

Britain and other European Union governments yesterday approved designs for a standard European driving licence.
The plastic photocard permit, bearing the EU flag of 12 gold stars on a blue background with the initials of each issuing country inside, will replace the 110 different paper and plastic permits currently in use across the EU.

The new licences may bear a microchip to make them readable by computer - a move that some MEPs have complained could amount to "an ID card by the back door". Countries will be free to choose whether to include a chip.
