Scientists say that on a typical spring or summer day in the Tampa Bay area, for instance, at least half the particles contained in the average person's breath of air originated in Africa.

Scientists are increasingly concerned about the environmental and health effects of chemicals and pollution from other continents.

Such particles have been implicated as the cause of algae blooms in Florida's coastal waters, and scientists have identified adverse effects on Atlantic coral, including a fungus deadly to sea fans.

Whether an organism such as the one that causes cholera can be transported so far "remains to be determined," U.S. geological survey researchers said in a July 2004 scientific paper.

Yet, the scientists added, "It is clear that a very diverse population of microorganisms, including fungi, bacteria, and viruses, is moving vast distances in Earth's atmosphere, and ... 20 percent to 30 percent ... consists of species capable of causing disease in a wide range of organisms (including) trees, crop plants, and animals."

I have the feeling this is not "news" to those of you who live in Florida!  I find my own breathing interferred with when we get large winds from the north out of Canada/Russia.
