Low Turnout for Pro-expulsion Demonstration

Last Update: 19/03/2005 20:14 700 police officers securing pro-pullout rally in Tel Aviv By Haaretz Service Thousands of people were gathering in Tel Aviv on Saturday evening to take part in a demonstration in favor of an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, scheduled to take begin shortly after 8 P.M.The demonstrators were to set out from Rabin Square towards Dizengoff Square.
Some 700 police officers and Border Policemen were securing the event.
At 7 P.M., police closed all streets adjacent to Rabin and Dizengoff Squares. Parts of Ibn Gvirol, Shaul Hamelech, Ben-Gurion, Frishman, and King George streets were to be closed during the course of the demonstration. The streets are set to reopen at 10 P.M.
Rally organizers said that some 100 buses would transport people from across the country to take part in the event, Army Radio reported.
Interior Minister Ophir Pines-Paz, MK Ran Cohen (Yahad), and Peace Now Secretary-General Yariv Oppenheimer are expected to give speeches at the rally.
Yahad chairman Yossi Beilin criticized Shinui Chairman Yosef Lapid on Saturday, saying the latter was preventing MKs in his party from taking part in the demonstration.
