Given the choice between two bad choices, the United States
reaffirmed its support for the PLO's Fatah party as the Palestinian civil
war rages on.
Speaking with reporters yesterday, U.S. State Department spokesman Sean
McCormack said the government is giving Mahmoud Abbas America's full
support. McCormack blamed Hamas for the fighting and cast the Gaza
violence as part of an ongoing effort by the Hamas military wing to
"short circuit and pre-empt" those Palestinians who reject
violence and support a political path to regional peace.
McCormack is right about Hamas, but suggesting the Palestinian Authority
"rejects violence" and supports a "political path to
peace" would require redefining the words "reject,"
"violence" and "peace."
The State Department is trying to cast Abbas in the role of
"peacemaker" simply because his party is seeking an easier way
to destroy Israel, not because Abbas has suddenly rejected the PLO
Charter.
Fatah is following founder Yasser Arafat's Phased Plan for the
Destruction of Israel. Arafat's "Phased Plan" in brief, goes
like this:
- Through the "armed struggle" (i.e., terrorism), to
establish an "independent combatant national authority" over
any territory that is "liberated" from Israeli rule. (Article
2)
- Continue the struggle against Israel, using the territory of the
national authority as a base of operations. (Article 4)
- Provoke an all-out war in which Israel's Arab neighbors destroy it
entirely ("liberate all Palestinian territory"). (Article 8)
The Phased Plan was adopted at the 12th Session of the Palestinian
National Council in Cairo on June 9, 1974. It is part of the PLO's
foundation Charter.
The last time Fatah agreed to amend its Charter, (including the Phased
Plan) was on April 25, 1996. The relevant articles of the PLO Charter
include:
Article 19: The establishment of Israel is fundamentally null and void,
whatever time has elapsed.
Article 15: [We call for] the liquidation of the Zionist presence in
Palestine.
Article 22: The liberation of Palestine will destroy the Zionist and
imperialist presence and will contribute to the establishment of peace in
the Middle East. ...
Despite numerous promises to amend the Charter, it remains unchanged.
The foolishness of supporting the lesser of two terrorist organizations
cannot be understated. Yesterday, WorldNetDaily ran a story reporting Hamas was videotaped brandishing
U.S. assault rifles, RPGs and armored personnel carriers the United
States gave to Abbas only a few months ago.
Abu Abdullah, considered one of the most important operational members of
Hamas' so-called military wing, bragged to WND: "We informed you
many times we would obtain all American arms brought to Gaza in the
conspiracy against our government."
Fatah is now awaiting delivery of more than a thousand more U.S.-made
weapons and a million rounds of ammunition, paid for by U.S. tax dollars.
Many members of Abbas' presidential army are also members of the al-Aqsa
Martyr's Brigade, which is itself part of Fatah.
The weapons themselves have not done PLO forces much good. When
confronted by Hamas fighters, most of them threw down their arms and fled
for the Egyptian border.
What should the U.S. do? They should follow Israel's example and get out
of the way. As long as the two terrorist groups are busily engaged in
killing each other, they aren't killing Israelis.
But in the final analysis, this ought to wake up the West and the U.S.,
especially as to the true nature of the Palestinians. We pushed Israel
into this insane act of giving the Palestinians Gaza. The Palestinians
quickly voted in the worst terrorist organization available – Hamas. With
Hamas now in control, Gaza will rapidly become "terror
central," with Hamas, Hezbollah, al-Qaida, et al., vying for who's
the "baddest."
Israel now has a sword pointed at its heart. If they do not get a leader
with some "guts" and quickly overthrow the terrorist Gazan
enclave, they will have civilian casualties mounting beyond their wildest
nightmares. When will we ever learn that a terrorist is a terrorist by
any other name?
