The allure of the "scholars' union" is the club of those who spend many fruitless years studying the wayward "church fathers" and endlessly parse and dispute over ancient Koine Greek variants found in the various available NT texts. It is slough of despond that many an otherwise fine Christian has cut his spiritual neck on and become dashed on the shore after falling for these sirens to the ears of human pride. It starts with this simple question, "Yea, hath God said...?" I (regrettably) confess to have fallen for such a trap for many years, but thank God that by his grace I have be enlightened and forgiven for such a wicked presumption: That I should think that I stand in judgement over the word of God, picking and choosing the English reading "that makes sense" to my fallen human mind. Today I read the King James Bible, believe every single word in it (even if it is obscure to me), and I refuse to correct it.  That is the path to having a good understanding of the Bible, not through years of theological study.
