"God does & does not
rate sin"
God does not rate sin ... and ... God
does rate sin.
For Unbelievers: One or many, small or great, All sin leads
to eternal hell (James
2:10) ...
However, hell has "levels" of punishment. The determining factors will be
how bad the sin is and how morally knowledgeable the person was who committed
it (Romans 2:9).
For Believers: One or many, small or great, All sin is forgiven
by the blood of Jesus Christ and will not send any Christian to hell (1Timothy 1:15)...
However, sin has "levels" of punishment in this life Galations 6:7
(where sin brings a loss of "fellowship" 1Jo 1:7 and
God sends us chastisement to bring us back to him, Hebrew 12:8
- and if that doesn't work he will even kill us and take us home, see Rom 8:13, 2Timothy
2:13) and/or loss of inheritance/rewards in the life to come (1Cr 3:15, Col
3:24, Gal
5:21). The determining factors are how "bad" the sin is (1John 5:16),
how morally knowledgeable the person was who committed it 1Pe 1:14,
and how long the person stubbornly went on in an un-confessed, un-repented
state 2 Cr 7:10.
It is not helpful for well intentioned Christians to minimize the seriousness
of the worse sins. By this tactic we frustrate the work of the Holy Spirit
in convincing sinners of their sinfulness and need for salvation. Jails are
a good place to win souls because everybody knows their sinfulness. But if
we tell people under conviction "your sin really is not that bad, it is the
same as every other one" then they ignore the conviction and no longer feel
the need to get right. We do them a serious disservice in this regard, and
frustrate the work of the Holy Spirit.
