Two people were killed and five others wounded when “Palestinian” terrorist forces fired mortar shells at the southern Gaza Jewish community of Ganei Tal Tuesday afternoon.
The shells slammed into the local hothouses, fatally wounding a Palestinian Arab and a Chinese laborer. The other casualties were all Palestinian Arabs.
The wounded were evacuated to Beersheva's Soroka Medical Center.
Earler in the day, terrorists operating out of northern Gaza fired at least four Kassam rockets at the nearby Negev town of Sderot, lightly wounding three Israeli Jews.
A 36-year-old mother and her two daughters, aged 8 and 16, were treated for hysteria at Ashkelon's Barzilai Hospital after one of the rockets slammed into their home, punching a large hole through the roof.
A short time later, terrorists fired a mortar shell at the southern Gaza Jewish community of Ganei Tal, damaging the local hothouses.
Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz was said to be considering a military response to the renewed “Palestinian” artillery attacks.
Last month, Mofaz warned Israel would respond severely if the Palestinian Arabs fired any more rockets.
Chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Yuval Steinitz, repeated his long-held assessment that a full-scale ground incursion was needed in Gaza.
“An expanded military operation needs to be carried out in the 'strip' in order to destroy the rocket-building factories and store-houses, the mortar-shells and the entire Hamas infrastructure,” the senior Likud MK said.
Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal said his town only expected the attacks to intensify following implementation of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's “disengagement” plan.
Meanwhile in northern Samaria, IDF soldiers engaged Islamic Jihad terrorists in a fierce firefight in the PA-controlled town of Jenin.
Local Islamic Jihad leader Marwah Kamil was killed during the exchange, as was another terrorist. An IDF soldier was lightly wounded.
Four Islamic Jihad members surrendered after the fall of their leader.
IDF sources confirmed Kamil was the target of the operation.
