.An original hand-written draft of the Balfour Declaration from 1917 was sold by Southby's at a U.S. auction for the price of $884,000. The draft was written by Leon Simon on July, 17,1917, a few months before the official document which was handed over on November 2, 1917. The Balfour Declaration was a letter written by Arthur James Balfour, British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to Lord Rothschild for the English Zionist Federation. It promises British aid in the rebuilding of a Jewish national home in Israel (Palastine), but it also demands that the civil and religious rights of non-Jews in the area be protected. There is also a clause protecting the status of Jews in other countries as well .
