A Special Report From Jerusalem

IMRA of Israel this week reported that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon regarded 2007 as a watershed year for the Middle East and the likely time for a regional war. Sharon was said to envision a U.S. military withdrawal from Iraq as emboldening Iran and its allies to launch a massive attack against Israel.

As a result, the sources said, Sharon has sought to ensure support from the United States in any regional crisis. The sources said Sharonâ€s plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank was meant to persuade President Bush that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would not be related to future Middle East regional tensions.

Will the Summer of 2005 Be Another Record-Setting Summer?

Earlier in the year, NOAA hurricane forecasters predicted another above-normal hurricane season on the heels of last yearâ€s destructive and historic hurricane season.

â€NOAAâ€s prediction for the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season is for 12 to15 tropical storms, with seven to nine becoming hurricanes, of which three to five could become major hurricanes,†said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator, at a news conference today in Bay St. Louis, Miss. â€Forecaster confidence that this will be an active hurricane season is very high.â€

Getting an early start on this yearâ€s tropical storm season, Arlene hit the Florida Panhandle last weekend after entering near the same place Hurricane Ivan came ashore in September 2004. Arlene dumped a tremendous amount of rain and was within a few miles-per-hour of reaching hurricane status. The annual Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1 and ends on November 30, but seldom to do storms form this early.

Last year, Florida and the southeastern U.S. experienced four record-setting hurricanes that produced $23 billion in insured property damages combined with an additional $12.9 billion provided by the U.S. government. (These figures do not include the uninsured property losses.)

Last summerâ€s hurricanes were directly connected to U.S.-Israel peace negotiations and major statements. During the week of August 9, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Kurtzer was meeting with the Israeli government to plan the eviction of Israelis out of unauthorized settlements by the November presidential elections (which didnâ€t happen).

On August 31, Ariel Sharon stated he would accelerate his settlement evacuation schedule †which was an effort to help President Bush 48 hours before his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention. Instead, Hurricane Frances, which the media said was the size of Texas, bore down on Florida, in essence stealing his thunder (no pun intended). Frances dropped from a Category 4 to a Category 2 right after President Bushâ€s acceptance speech. The only thing Bush said in his speech about Israel was that they were a very good friend of the United States. There was no mention of the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

On September 21, President Bush told the U.N. General Assembly in a major pre-election foreign policy address that Israel must evacuate unauthorized settlements and stop settlement construction. He also mentioned that the Israelis must negotiate in good faith and treat the Palestinians with dignity. Hurricane Jeanne was heading east-northeast after devastating Haiti and immediately made a course correction †and within 48 hours was heading back toward Florida.

At the same time these activities and statements were being made by President Bush and someone from his administration pertaining to Israelâ€s covenant land, Hurricanes Charlie, Frances and Jeanne were clobbering Florida and, to a much lesser degree, the southeastern U.S. As Israel was being told to evacuate settlements, four of the largest evacuations in U.S. history took place. President Bushâ€s brotherâ€s state was being devastated.

Hurricane Ivan also occurred at the time of Bush Administration meetings and increased pressure on Israel to comply. Interestingly, Hurricane Ivan came ashore on Rosh HaShannah (the Feast of Trumpets), and Hurricane Jeanne came ashore on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement).

Earthquake Activity

We receive e-mails from the USGS whenever there is a world earthquake that registers 5.0 or higher. In the last four weeks, the frequency of earthquakes in this range has been increasing substantially; as a matter of fact, the frequency and the weekly increase in magnitude remind me of the 90-day period prior to the December 26, 2004, Indian Ocean tsunami.

Four significant quakes have hit California this week: A magnitude 5.2 quake shook Riverside County on Sunday, and a magnitude 7.2 quake struck Tuesday under the ocean 90 miles off Northern California. As reported by Fox News, a strong earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California (search) on Thursday night, just hours after a moderate quake shook most of Southern California. Neither caused serious damage or injuries. A 6.4-magnitude temblor hit about 125 miles west of Eureka around 11:30 p.m. Thursday. Earlier in the day, a 4.9-magnitude quake struck (east of Los Angeles), rattling homes.

Therefore, while we are making no predictions, we are keeping a watchful eye on the recent earthquake activity and the forecasts of a major Atlantic hurricane season in light of the scheduled August 15 commencement date of Israelâ€s evacuation of Jews from 21 settlements in Gaza and four in Northern Samaria. There certainly are interesting (and alarming) parallels.

Furthermore, the August 15 date will be one day after this yearâ€s 9th of Av on Jewish calendars. The 9th of Av is the date of the destruction of the First and the Second Temples in Jerusalem and the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. There also have been many other tragedies for the Jews throughout history that have fallen on the 9th of Av.

We Have Contacted the White House

A few of our new readers have been curious if we have contacted President Bush about the consequences of dividing Israel. Yes, we have. We have written the White House three times, and have two letters in response from President Bush. We delivered a petition with 26,500 names †which they extrapolate into significant numbers more with the same belief. I donâ€t think there is a subject on which the White House has received more phone calls, e-mails or letters than on dividing the land of Israel.

When Condoleeza Rice was national security advisor, she had 24 Christian leaders come to the White House who represented both sides of the Israel land issue.

Additionally, if President Bush changed his position on Israelâ€s land and stood with Israel, the international community, the Arab oil interests, and the replacement theology part of the church (63.5 percent of American churchgoers) would think the president has lost his mind and would ask him to step down in his role as the point man for the Quartetâ€s Road Map.

President Bush is in a very difficult position. Also, unbeknownst to him, he has a prophetic role. But if he continues in this course, it doesnâ€t bode well for him or for our nation. At this point, all we can do is pray for Godâ€s will to be done †and that the president will eventually see the consequences and do something about it. Genesis 12:3 makes it clear that he will be blessed or cursed depending on whether he blesses or curses Israel.
