SUMMER SOLSTICE: The annual June solstice occurs at 8:57 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday, June 20th. This is when the Sun is farthest north for the year and begins its six-month return southward. From the Greek island of Kefalonia, Vasilis Wooseas sends this solstice-photo of the "Cave of the Nymphs." (continued below)

"The top of the cave is collapsed," says Wooseas. "Close to summer solstice, by noon, when the Sun is almost vertical above the collapsed roof of the cave, a pillar of sunlight makes it to the water of the lake and illuminates it in such a way that the boats seem like hovering on a field of turquoise light.
