God is so mathematical and only He can figure out a way to "shorten the days" so that some flesh might survive the 3 years of darkness (3 days of darkness) and yet still have 1260 days fit into a 3-year timespan.

In this article, they suggest the earth used to rotate faster, but that it still took the same amount of time to go around the sun:
"But the daily rings of ancient corals dated to 400 million years ago are narrower and each annual cycle produces 410, not 365. The Earths' orbit around the Sun has always been constant at one year, so when these ancient corals were alive the days were shorter, lasting 21 hours, meaning that the Earth was spinning faster."
Please don't think I'm suggesting that this article is correct, but what I found interesting is that they are saying that the Earth's orbit around the sun has always been constant, so if there were more than 365 days in a year, the earth was spinning faster, but still taking the same amount of time to orbit the sun.
This suggests that even if the earth's rotation increases, the amount of time that it takes to revolve around the sun remains the same and thus, the number of days increase to make a year. So they are saying that if it took 410 days to rotate the sun, then the days were only 21 hours in length.
If this is correct, all I can say is wow, God is truly awesome to plan it in such a way that exactly 1/3 of the Great Tribulation is shortened by 1/3. What a tremendous way to show the world His Sovereignty and power. And what a perfect fulfillment of the fourth trumpet judgment, that 1/3 of the day and also 1/3 of the night is without light. For exactly 1/3 of the 1260 days. So, we have 360+360+360+180 =1260. This is the "time, times, and half a time". The 360+360 are normal 24-hour days. The 360+180 (540 days) are 16 hours in length, which would equal 360 24-hour days. 540 X 16 = 8640 / 24 = 360. In other words, God turns 360 days into 540 days by shortening the day and night to 16 hours in fulfillment of the 4th trumpet judgment. And He does this for exactly 1/3 of the Great Tribulation (360 days). This means that if the Great Tribulation begins on Oct 27/28, 2013, the 1260 days would still end on the Day of Atonement in 2016 and the 1335 days would end on Hanukkah, the "blessed day" (Haggai 2), Christmas Day, in December 2016.
I believe these last 3 years of Great Tribulation is God's way of revealing Himself to a lost and dying world and showing His incredible power as in the days of old. And I believe that many will see this and turn to Him who otherwise would never had believed in Him and would be eternally lost. So it is not hard for me to believe that He can shorten the days and that the scientists would come up with a theory that it has to do with Nibiru pulling on earth or something, and maybe that actually will be how He will shorten the days. Or maybe He'll just flick earth with His finger and make it spin faster. :)

When you had written:

How do you understand the manner in which the days are shortened?
Are the total number of days reduced by a third?
Or are the total hours of the days reduced by a third?
Or are the nights lengthened by a third, i.e. less daylight, but more night, like in the winter?
Or some other way?
