The girls have had quite the summer camp experience. This week alone, they met Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and went on a tour of the Kremlin, toured Rome with their mother and grandmother and finished the week here. But Obama did not want the girls to end their summer without some lessons about life.
"I think it was particularly important for Malia and Sasha who are growing up in such a blessed way to be reminded history can take very cruel turns," Obama said.
"And hopefully one of the things that was imparted to them during this trip is their sense of obligation to fight oppression and cruelty wherever it appears," he added. "And that any group of people who are degrading another group of people have to be fought against with whatever tools we have available to us."

Dear Doves,
Saturday afternoon, after studying Obadiah for awhile, I was prompted to hear what (President) Obama said. The second I turned on the television, there he was! I know, not sooooo surprising given the media coverage he has, LOL, but right at that second was pretty impressive to me!
The story above was being covered on Fox. The first portion of the above quotes is what I remember hearing, especially the part "history can take very cruel turns" which got my attention, not only from the perspective of the slavery issue, but also in light of all things/scripture considered, and Obadiah included. Somehow I don't think it would have concerned me near as much if he had said "history has taken very cruel turns" ... but I could be a little sensitive when it comes to what our President says these days.
I think I would have remembered the second portion, as it is nearly as concerning to me as the first. As a matter of a fact, I remember there were "technical difficulties" according to reporter Major Garrett, so the second quote was not broadcast in the clip. What a very broad statement, that second portion, don't you think?
And to "degrade"? Are Christians going to be considered guilty of degrading others when we don't agree with abortion or if we only support marriage between a man and a woman?
I know that this was just some of what President Obama said on 7/11.
This was the part that was brought to my attention.
In His love and mine,
