Quartet to meet with Abbas, Olmert in Egypt in mid-July: Solana

Brussels. The quartet for peace in the Middle East will probably meet with leaders from Israel and the Palestinian Authority in Egypt in mid-July, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said Monday, cited by AFP.
A similar meeting had been planned for June, but the gathering was postponed after the Islamist group Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip.
"Before the end of this month of July, toward the middle of the month, we will recuperate this initiative," Solana said, adding that the meeting would take place in Egypt.
The Quartet, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as well as representatives of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were "the mechanism the most adapted" to boosting peace talks, he said.
