"MIDDLE EAST: ARAB NATIONS PREPARE FOR ROME CONFERENCE"

Beirut, 24 July (AKI) - Arab nations are working on a seven-point peace plan to present to Wednesday's international conference in Rome on Israel-Lebanon conflict. According to Egyptian diplomatic sources, quoted by al-Sharq al-Awsat, there have been intense contacts between Riyadh, Cairo and Amman to prepare a peace proposal. The Arab initiative is said to include an accord for an immediate and total ceasefire on Israel's part as well as its withdrawal from Lebanon in exchange for the disarmament of Hezbollah.

"It is a fair and balanced plan" an Egyptian source told the newspaper, that includes key elements for security in the area". In particular the Arab initiative calls for the support of the entire international community and of the UN Security Council on seven points: the immediate end of military activity, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanon, the deployment of an international force along the border, the strengthening of the Lebanese national agency and its presence in the area.

The plan also calls for Israel to respect Lebanon's territorial sovreignty but also that the Hezbollah militia transform into a purely political movement and that there are immediate efforts to rebuild the infrastructure struck by Israeli bombs.
