During the month of April, the Minuteman Project announced that it had placed 857 volunteers along the Arizona border. The group was denounced as vigilantes by the left, but they were responsible for apprehending hundreds of illegal aliens in a single month.

Once word got out, illegal border crossings dropped from some 500 arrests per day to fewer than fifteen. The presence of the citizen border guards scared most of the alien smugglers away. They were so effective that the Naco, Arizona Border Patrol supervisors issued a memo telling Border Patrol NOT to arrest illegal aliens after the project ended because an increase in apprehensions there would prove the effectiveness of Minuteman volunteers.
