"The choice was:  CAFTA or give Central America to China"

FREE TRADE IS ALWAYS GOOD IN THE LONG RUN

If Central American economies become stronger, there will be less incentive for them to come here. In addition, China would have taken over South America entirely.  We live in a global economic world, so the idea of protectionism and isolationism really doesn't work.  Nothing stays the same.

I am always in favor of free trade.  Capitalism works. Those who fear losing their jobs have to understand the ebb and flow of a changing world. We were an agricultural economy, then industrialized, then technological and now evolving into service oriented.  Just over one hundred years ago it took 50% of the population to farm and feed the other 50%. Now it takes less than 3% of the population to feed the other 97% . Where do the people go who used to be farmers?  To the factories. Once the factories move to other countries, you have to evolve into technological industries, etc. Nothing stays the same, therefore the idea of isolationism and protectionism is antiquated.  The world is changing. We have to adapt.
