http://www.fivedoves.com/letters/july2005/1cor1031-725.htmMy heart and prayers go out to you, having just been through a similar ordeal with my Father's passing last fall........complete with the dysfunctional family reunion 3 ring circus and all etc.
In addition to prayer, I have some practical advice:
After 2 weeks in intensive care the hospital moved my 87 year old father into a regular room, one day before he was to be released, since he had had such a dramatic recovery. (Thanks to God!) Then the new nursing staff gave him medication that he wasn't suppose to have, which caused internal bleeding. So WATCH everything that is given to your mother....ask questions, what are they giving her, and why? And who ordered it?
In order to stop the internal bleeding the doctors arrived at midnight at the hospital with an 11th hour solution.....to do a colostomy on my Dad to remove his intestines to stop the internal bleeding. I refused to leave my Father's bedside and continued in prayer over him, while my loving (but atheist) brother conferred with doctors about the possible surgery. I didn't know until later that my brother consented to a surgery that my Father only had a 10% chance of surviving! He died in surgery. My brother didn't believe or understand the power of prayer, and feared that my Dad would die a long drawn out death. So, unless you have a Christian doctor they are clueless as to God's will in a situation. Remember that 80% of all "prognosis" are WRONG statistically! This is a fact. God is the final authority on life and death. So don't be discouraged with all kinds of negative prognoses. Get a SECOND opinion before any risky surgery is performed. When in doubt....WAIT.....wait on God for an answer. Don't let the atheists in your family rush your mother into something.
If your mother is in a lot of pain, the pain meds are no doubt affecting her mind....think of her as drunk, because the side affects are similar.
Maranatha!
Deborah
