The same thing happened with the Roman Empire.  They stretched themselves out so thin that they got slaughtered right in their land.  They kept trying to fight other wars and keep things "in order" while abandoning their own territory or leaving it naked.  Sounds like America right now.  I heard a quote that says something about
"One thing for sure about history is that we never seem to learn from it"
