Deja Vu, All Over Again (and again and again)
by Jack KinsellaLast May, the US House of Representatives passed a resolution authorizing
the administration to use 'all appropriate means' to put an end to Iran's
nuclear weapons development program. Iran's nuclear program is shrouded
by secrecy, as was Saddam's, but in Iran's case, we have the satellite
pictures to prove it.According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Iran has kept secret
its nuclear programs for 18 years. The IAEA says it has found evidence of
Iran having enriched uranium and reprocessed plutonium in undeclared
facilities and without international safeguards. Enrichment of uranium and
reprocessing plutonium are both required to create nuclear weapons.Iran claims its nuclear research is for 'peaceful purposes' like producing
energy for domestic consumption. (Iran, by the way, is awash in oil. The
Iranians need alternative energy sources like frogs need motorcycle
helmets)British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said on Sunday he was unsure whether
to believe Iran's insistence that it has no intention of trying to build
nuclear weapons. "I'm not sure, is the answer. And nobody is," Straw said
in an interview with BBC radio.Former National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft published an op-ed piece
in the Washington Post in which he argued,"We are at a critical moment. Are we serious in our efforts to prevent
nuclear proliferation, or will we watch the world descend into a maelstrom
where weapons-grade nuclear material is plentiful and unimaginable
destructive capability is available to any country or group with a grudge
against society?Staring into that abyss should stir us to action. What can we do? The
United States, Britain, France and Germany have already shown an
encouraging, if insufficient, degree of cooperation with respect to the
Iranian nuclear program. Russia has been the principal source of
assistance in the development of Iranian nuclear power."Israeli intelligence concluded in the mid-1990's that Iran had enlisted
the A.Q Khan network for expertise and equipment to make nuclear weapons.
A.Q. Khan bears the infamous title of 'father of the Pakistani Bomb' and
the even more infamous title of 'world's biggest nuclear proliferator.'Under an $800 million contract, Russia began building Iran's Bushehr
reactor in May 1995 with 150 technicians at the site. The Russian contract
called for 3,000 Russian engineers and construction workers. By 1999, some
300 Russians were among the 900 workers there.Assessment:
Hmmm. The Russians, the Persians, nuclear weaponry . . . I seem to have
heard that somewhere before. But wait! There's more! While the House of Representatives has
authorized the administration to use 'all appropriate means' to prevent
Iran getting its hands on the Bomb, it is extremely unlikely that we would
risk war with Iran while simultaneously occupying Iraq. And an American preemptive attack against Iran, authorized by Congress or
not, would bring the wrath of the whole world down on Washington. It
would almost certainly cost the US whatever tiny bit of good will we have
earned in the region. In the past, US politicians sought to assure us that most Muslims were
'moderate' by saying something like "ninety percent of Muslims are
peace-loving and law abiding" -- until somebody sat down with a
calculator. There are roughly 2 billion Muslims on the planet. If 90% are peaceful,
etc., the math says that ten percent are not. Ummm, what is ten percent
of 2 billion? 200 million? Gee, this is sounding more familiar all the
time. . .In 1981, the Reagan administration faced a similar crisis when Israeli
intelligence confirmed that Saddam Hussein was building a nuclear reactor
facility at Osirak. The reactor, built by the French, produced 27.5
pounds of 93% weapons-grade uranium. Saddam's Iraq would have been a
nuclear power within two years.A surprise attack by Israeli F-15s and F-16s vaporized Osirak in 80
seconds, solving Reagan's dilemma without US involvement. An Israeli
attack on Iran's nuclear facilities wouldn't exactly absolve the US of
involvement -- those days are long past. To the Arab world, the United
States and Israel are two sides of the same coin. (Interesting the way
that worked out, isn't it?)BUT, an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would be enough cover
to allow the Arab 'moderates' to stay 'moderate' by focusing their anger
on the Israelis, instead. And the White House WAS authorized to use 'ALL
appropriate measures' to shut down Iran's nuclear sandbox.Ummm, Russia, Persia, 200 million angry zealots, a war against Christians
and Jews, mushroom clouds and Israeli airstrikes. . . I KNOW I've heard
this before, somewhere."Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, [Russia] the
chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: [Moscow and Tobolsk] And I will turn
thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and
all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of
armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them
handling swords: Persia, [Iran] Ethiopia, and Libya [Muslim North Africa]
with them; all of them with shield and helmet: Gomer, and all his bands;
the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: [Gomer and
Togarmah = modern Turkey] and many people with thee." (Ezekiel 38:2-6)Ok, even if you want to quibble about whether Russia is Gog, or Gomer and
Togarmah are Turkey, Ezekiel is pretty specific about the timing, as well
as the geography of the battlefield."After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt
come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered
out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been
always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall
dwell safely all of them." (38:8)Ok, so Israel isn't 'dwelling safely' at the moment. But it is trying to.
Israel is so desperate it is falling back on a technology that was ancient
even in Ezekiel's time. In an age of aircraft and precision guided bombs,
the Israelis are building a separation fence to keep Palestinian
terrorists at bay."Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same
time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil
thought: And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled
villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of
them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates." (10-11)One can't very well have a 'land of unwalled villages' without first
having a wall in place to take down, can one? President Reagan would have
looked pretty silly saying, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down the wall!" if there
wasn't a wall to tear down in the first place. And, having constructed its wall despite being universally condemned for
it, when the wall DOES come back down (and it will) Israel will once again
be identified among nations as the 'land of unwalled villages'.Note, also, that I am not jumping all over Scripture to draw the
connections between prophecy and current events. This is Ezekiel's
story, and I'm stickin' to it. Truth never needs to be explained or
interpreted. Truth is obvious by its very nature. So, let's summarize
the global security situation again and see how things line up.The Russians are helping the Iranians build a nuclear reactor in the
middle of a religious war ongoing between the forces of Islam and the
forces of Christianity and Judaism. (As defined by the enemy, not by us)Iran is an Islamic Republic governed by Islamofacists who openly support
terrorist groups like Hezbollah and quietly support other groups linked to
al-Qaeda.To keep the Bomb out of terrorist hands, there is no alternative except to
bomb the poop out of Iran until they don't have any more nukes, but if
America does that, it will create an instant 200-million strong army of
enraged lunatics dedicated to our destruction. On the other hand, that same army of enraged lunatics is already dedicated
to Israel's destruction anyway, and the Israelis are pragmatic enough to
realize they have only two choices, both bad. They can blow up Iran's nukes and risk retaliation by the Russians who own
them, together with the rest of the Arab world who will only be too happy
to join them in annihilating Israel, or they can wait until Iran gets a
nuke and blows Israel off the map. That about size things up as you see them? It's almost as if everybody is
reading from the same script. (except the enemy forgot to read to the end
of the chapter)Here's Ezekiel's summary of how it all turns out:
"And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will
rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with
him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone."
(Ezekiel 38:22)So, here's where I jump around in Scripture to make my point.
"And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up
your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh." (Luke 21:28)
