Pre-born babies see God?

Dear friends:

Last night on TBN, Pastor Jentezen Franklin and Perry Stone were discussing abortion.  Pastor Franklin told an amazing story, which really touched me.

He told about the young parents of a 5-year-old little boy who brought home their new baby from the hospital.  The little boy was intrigued with his new little brother, and to the mother's puzzlement began asking to be able to spend just five minutes alone with him.

The mother was hesitant at such an unusual request, even though there was no sign of jealousy or hostility.  The son was insistent, and it seemed important to him, so she finally gave in and allowed the boy into the infant's room by himself.  He went up to the crib.  The mother left the room, but put her ear up against the closed door so that she could hear what was going on.

Suddenly, she could hear her 5-year-old son say, "Quick, tell me what God looks like.  I am forgetting."

This raises the theological question of the possibility of our personhood and existence before conception.  I searched my mind for a Scripture on the subject and remembered Jeremiah 1:5, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you" (NIV).

God said, "I knew you."  A study of the Hebrew word for "knew" (yada) reveals that it does, in fact, mean "knew," or acquainted with.

I realized that for God to know us and be acquainted with us before conception, we have to exist.  He cannot know a non-existent being.  Of course, it could be talking about foreknowledge, but based on the wording used, that would seem to be a stretch.  I choose to take God's words literally.

Several years ago I read of someone's revelation of heaven where he observed such pre-born babies.  Yes, it is a mystery, but so are a lot of other things.

Perhaps that 5-year-old boy did have a fading recollection of what God looks like, and maybe all little children do, gradually lost as they enter and grow into this fallen world.

I choose to believe they do.
