I continue to hear many speculations as to whether President Bush is born-again. Such speculation seems to have its base in decisions or behavior with which the writer does not feel is worthy of a Christian. This ignores the fact that most of our information is not where we are eyewitnesses but receive second or third hand by a media that I think almost all of us would be considered godless. However, I can certainly attest that there are many things Bush does that I may disagree with, but when we apply his behavior against his born again status, I have a question. Who among us was born full grown?
If I had media following me around taking note of every move I make, might I do something that my violate someone, if not everyone's standard of what a Christian should do? When one stumbles does that mean they are not born again, or are they simply carnal and infants as we once were or are? I am not convinced that any one of us can ever discern whether a carnal or infant professing Christian is truly born again. If we could, then why would Jesus have given us the parable of the wheat and tares? But in the context of the direction of the country, what does it matter? Yes, it is comforting that Bush prays, and if he does not have a seed of Christ planted in him then he is a better actor than his speaking ability would imply. However, in the final analysis "The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD,
Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes." NKJV Prov 21:1
God did not have the least problem moving the heart of pagan kings like Nebuchanezer, Cyrus and Darius to benefit His people. The leader is an instrument of the Lord, regardless. We make a grave error in thinking we have no benefit for praying for pagan leaders.
I submit to you that the greatest example of God moving the hearts of kings to benefit Israel came in pagan kings more than those of Israel. Imagine Daniel's prayer of intercession for Israel resulting in the release of Israel from captivity, restoring of all of the temple vessels plus the money to pay for its rebuilding. All this from a pagan king. What is missing in America is the power of humble prayer from God's people. Perhaps I underestimate this, because we have been given a remarkable time to come to repentance, but just as we can resist the law of gravity for a time, everything lifted up will eventually fall to earth. God's spiritual laws are just as irresistible. "God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble." We may lift ourselves up for a time, but as surely as gravity pulls us to earth our pride will also fall in His time.
From personal experience, some of us, I would think should need little convincing of that.
