COMING SOON: BIG SUNSPOTS From Earth, only one side of the sun is plainly visible, but using a technique called helioseismic holography, astronomers can see the other side, too. Recent far-side images (July 5th - 10th) reveal some big sunspots. Here's an example: (continued below)

If they persist, these 'spots will emerge over the sun's east limb, carried into view by solar rotation, between July 13th and 17th. Heightened solar activity is possible in the days ahead.

MORNING STAR: It's not easy waking up before dawn, but this week it's worth doing. Venus, the "morning star," is absolutely brilliant in the eastern sky, and its getting brighter every day. On July 13th, Venus and the crescent moon will appear side by side--a lovely sight. On July 15th Venus reaches maximum brightness for the rest of 2004. Don't miss it!

SOLAR STORMS: Remember last October and November when the sun went haywire? Giant sunspots unleashed some of the most powerful flares in history; auroras appeared as far south as FloridaWell... the storm isn't over. (continued below)

Shockwaves from the storm are still traveling across the solar system. They've been detected by spacecraft at Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and beyond. In April 2004, a coronal mass ejection (CME) swept past Voyager 2 seven billion miles from the Sun! Soon, the disturbance will reach the very edge of our solar system. What will happen when it gets there? Stay tuned for the answer from Science@NASA.
