NASA on the Moon - Lunar Gravity Shifting
Scary? Not really. Their sensational title suggests this is a huge new development, and they leave out this tiny detail:
The Moon is spiraling away from Earth at a rate of 38 mm per year.
Eccentricity means the Moon's orbit is not a perfect circle, which is the norm.
The anomaly is that the Moon's orbit is expanding by about 1.5 inches per year for every year we've been measuring it (going back almost 40 years).
No one knows why. Hence the NASA GRAIL project.
This interesting fact was mentioned in the recent TV show "Terra Nova", which portraits a closer (and visually larger) moon in the distant past.
So, in short, anyone who tells you the Moon is suddenly out of place in the sky,... well ... they didn't do their homework.
