"Regulating the internet"

Porn filter rolled out for all Australians

The Australian Federal Government has announced all Internet Service Providers would be required to install a mandatory filter to protect children from pornography and violent websites.

The Federal Telecommunications Minister, Senator Stephen Conroy, made the statement on Monday, despite civil libertarians’ outcry over the filter measure.
Critics labelled this rule as a form of censorship. Senator Conroy responded to the outrage, defiantly, by saying the new Rudd government had no qualms about the need to regulate the Internet.

Superficially it really looks good.  Keeping the big bad wolf, the pornography and violent websites from the young and the unbalanced.  In reality, it is a classic case of bolting the stable door after the horse has bolted.  They allowed pornography and all the rubbish to be in the net so long and now wants to ban them.

The real issue is when they ban, will they indiscriminately ban all the anti-establishment sites as well?  What about the Christian sites and other sites?  It really bothers me to think that I have to satisfy myself with the ‘news’ that are dished out on the newspapers and the TV media which are not worth reading or watching for that matter! We are truly moving towards a police/nanny state.  One more nail in the coffin for the freedom lovers.

Even so come Lord Jesus!
