DHS to announce new driver’s license rules

WASHINGTON (CNN) — By 2017, American citizens who board domestic flights or picnic in national parks will be required to flash a more secure driver’s license under federal regulations to be announced Friday by the Department of Homeland Security, a homeland security official told CNN Thursday. The new rules stem from the post-9/11 REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005 to make it more difficult for terrorists and other criminals to obtain government identification. But civil liberties groups have panned the Act, saying it essentially creates a national ID card system that puts personal data at risk and smacks of Big Brother. Some states are also balking at the new rules, citing either the cost of the effort or posting objections similar to those of the civil liberties groups.
