DAYTIME COMET: Comet McNaught is now visible in broad daylight. Just hours ago, Mark Vornhusen took this picture of the comet between clouds over Gais, Switzerland:

details: Nikon D70 camera, 500 mm lens.
"At 1400 UT the comet was easily visible to the unaided eye," he reports.
This weekend is a special time for Comet McNaught because it is passing close to the sun. Solar heat is causing the comet to vaporize furiously and brighten in kind. At magnitude -5, McNaught is now the brightest comet since Ikeya-Seki in 1965.
To see Comet McNaught in daylight, go outside around noontime and face south. Stand in the shadow of a building to block the sun's glare. Make a fist and hold it out at arm's length. McNaught is about one fist-width (5 degrees) to the left (east) of the sun. Try it!
Warning: Binoculars may help you find the comet, but be super-careful. A stray shaft of sunlight seen through binoculars can cause permanent eye damage.
