U.S. PREPARES FOR IRAN LONG-RANGE MISSILEShttp://www.menewsline.com/stories/2007/january/01_29_2.html
WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States has launched an effort to counter Iran's nascent long-range ballistic missile program.
Officials said the Defense Department plans to deploy missile defense assets in Eastern Europe that could intercept Iranian intermediate-range missiles fired toward the United States or its European allies. They said the Czech Republic and Poland have been selected to host the missile defense assets amid an expected Iranian threat to Europe over the next few years.
"We want to have this in place by the 2011-2012 timeframe," Missile Defense Agency director Henry Obering said. "Because we think the Iranians, for example, shortly thereafter will be able to have a long-range capability -- not one that they've demonstrated today or necessarily tomorrow."
On Jan. 26, the United States conducted a successful flight test of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system. The Missile Defense Agency and Lockheed Martin said THAAD intercepted a unitary target in a test over the Pacific Ocean.
