WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States has determined
that Iran was exercising two options in its effort to produce nuclear weapons.
Officials said the State Department has assessed that
the Islamic regime was advancing uranium enrichment and plutonium production
in Teheran's drive toward nuclear weapons. They said Iran has not yet decided
which method was more feasible to reach its nuclear goal.
"The main technical hurdle standing between a leadership
bent on acquiring nuclear weapons and assembly of those weapons is acquisition
of the necessary fissile material -- highly-enriched uranium or plutonium,"
Gregory Schulte, the U.S. envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency,
said. "Iran is developing the capability to produce both."
In an address to an IAEA conference in Rabat, Morocco
on Jan. 9, Schulte said Iran's uranium enrichment program was based at
a pilot plant in Natanz, which Teheran first asserted was an agricultural
research center. He said Iran was working to master uranium enrichment
technology and preparing to start large-scale operations
