My wife talked to an Arab in America who said he was voting for Hamas mostly because the government of Arafat's party was corrupt.  They didn't support Hamas' terroristic strategies, but the existing government is so steeped into graft and stuff that they just want a change.  So perhaps it wasn't as much a sign of Hamas' support as a protest vote against the status quo.
