The World Jewish Congress will propose that Israel be granted associate membership in NATO.
Rabbi Israel Singer, chairman of the WJC’s governing board, said he didn’t know exactly what “associate membership” would mean, since the North Atlantic Treaty Organization doesn’t currently have such a status, but Singer said it could help make Israel feel secure enough to take risks for peace. Israel currently is a partner in NATO’s “Mediterranean Dialogue” program. The NATO proposal is expected to come up when the WJC meets beginning Sunday in Brussels.
