Hundreds of Islamic websites and mail-groups united on the 17th day of Ramadan, with the goal of reaching one million surfers. Their overt aim: "rescuing Jerusalem from the adders' jaws." Their covert aim: to raise money for Islamic charities which in their turn help financing terror. For the second year now, two Islamic websites and a group of prominent Islamic scholars and clerics joined together to create ‘Al-Quds (Jerusalem) International Day on the Internet.’ Most well-known among the organizers is Dr. Yousuf Al-Qara'dawi, an influential and widely respected Qatar-based cleric.
‘Al-Quds Internet Day’ organizers often aver their purpose to be to "remind one million Muslim web-surfers of Jerusalem's value, the nature of the occupiers and their goals, and the necessity to defend Al-Aq'sa mosque using all the power we have, as well as stopping all violence from all sides."
Although the lofty goal of "stopping all violence" is cited as part of the event’s purpose, many question whether this is, indeed, so.
One primary purpose of the event is to persuade Muslims to donate money to dozens of Islamic charity funds for the benefit of the Palestinians. A list of charities from around the world was published, and people were solicited to donate to such noble causes as the renovation of mosques; printing 500 copies of the Quran; and free transportation for people who want to pray in Jerusalem’s Al-Aq'sa mosque – all of which are laudable efforts within the Muslim world.
