OMAN DEVELOPS SPECIAL OPERATIONS FORCE

ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Oman has launched a project to develop the military's special operation force.

Gulf Cooperation Council sources said Oman has become one of several regional countries that have launched a special operations wing of the military. The GCC sources said Oman's force was being developed by several foreign allies, including Britain and Jordan.

The goal of the force was to develop a cadres of combatants who could operate in an urban environment and conduct combat and reconnaissance missions, the sources said. The special operations force was also meant for use in the sultanate with a capability of being deployed for foreign missions.

On Sept. 22, Oman graduated the first batch of special operations force members. The ceremony was presided over by Oman Army commander Maj. Gen. Said Bin Nasser Bin Suleiman Al Salmi.
