Viktor Yushchenko, Ukraine's president, on Tuesday set a target date of 2007 for the European Union to accept his country as a future member.
 
Mr Yushchenko, speaking at the start of a European tour, is determined to maintain Ukraine's momentum towards the EU after his inauguration last Sunday.

Speaking in Strasbourg, he said he hoped the EU would commit itself to an association agreement with Ukraine - a precursor to full membership - in 2007.
