The Vatican had branded the kidnapping a "despicable terrorist act" and demanded that he be freed. The Vatican said that a ransom of $200,000 had been initially demanded.
The word is, no ransom was paid. Of course, there never would be an admission of paying a ransom. I suspect there was a ransom paid because the terrorists do not free people out of their own good will.
