Wednesday, December 15, 2004
By Anthony UrtiAntony Flew, a British professor of philosophy and a leading champion of atheism for more than a half-century, has renounced his atheism and says that he now believes in God, based on scientific evidence. While he would consider himself a deist, insisting that the Christian God resembles a “cosmic Saddam Hussein,” Flew’s turning from atheistic evolutionist to believer in an intelligent designer is significant.
Essentially, Flew has concluded that there had to be a first cause of the universe, a super-intelligence that can be the only possible explanation for the origin of life and the complexity of nature. Sadly, Flew does not believe in an afterlife, even though he is the son of a Methodist minister.
Many Books Written Advocating Atheism
Flew proudly proclaimed the “folly of faith,” noting the “lack of evidence” for God, as a teacher at Oxford, Aberdeen, Keele, and Reading Universities in England. He often brought his message to United States and Canadian college campuses.
In a 1950s article entitled “Theology and Falsification,” Flew announced what he saw as the “peculiar danger, the endemic evil, of theological utterance.” It put him on the map. According to one student, “Flew’s name and stature are big. Whenever you hear people talk about atheists, Flew always comes up.”
Science Discovers God?
Flew says that his newfound philosophy can be compared to the intelligent design movement here in the United States. In a new video called “Has Science Discovered God?” he says, “[DNA] has shown by its almost unbelievable complexity of the arrangements which are needed to produce life, that intelligence must have been involved.”
Flew’s half-conversion can be glimpsed in a letter that he wrote to the August-September issues of England’s Philosophy Now magazine, in which he states, “It has become inordinately difficult even to begin to think about constructing a naturalistic theory of the evolution of that first reproducing organism.”
That is an incriminating statement for a movement, which has for so long relied on the other writings of the statement’s author! Indeed, it seems that Flew is following the Logos where it leads!
Take Action!
Please pray that Flew’s spiritual journey would not end at deism, but that he would be awakened to his own sin, repent, and confess Christ alone as Lord of all.
