In reading about the two events, I thought some things were worth thinking about further.  I'm not sure if they mean anything, but maybe the 2 events could be prophetic in nature.
 
Dates:  The 1964 Alaskan quake was on Good Friday, the day the Lord Jesus was crucified for our sins.  The 2004 Indonesian quake was the day after Christmas, the day after we celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus, our Saviour.
 
Location, magnitude, effects:  The first one in the northern hemisphere, the second in the southern hemisphere.  Magnitude of 1964 was 9.2, 2004 was 9.1.  Both quakes generated tsunamis; the effects of the Asian tsunami an order of magnitude larger than that in Alaska with deaths 283,000 vs. 115.
 
Summary:  The 2004 quake is 40 years ( Jewish generation) after the 1964 quake, both of them occurring on or near the celebration of the Lord Jesus, birth and death.
 
Significance:  Our blessed Saviour was born, died, and resurrected for the salvation of mankind.  Two of the largest magnitude earthquakes have occurred as described above.  This generation  has seen these 2 events, and there will be a 3rd sometime in the future.  Seismologist tell us we could experience another major quake in the near future due to a number of factors.  Can we expect the 3rd one to be the final one we will see, and will it be associated with resurrection, to complete the cycle of the Lord Jesus' legacy and the end of the church age?
 
Luke 21, verses 25-28 allude to signs in nature, specifically the "roaring and tossing of the sea."   "When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up yours heads, because your redemption is drawing near."
 
I'm sure we are to "lift up our heads" and look for the Lord Jesus.
