"REPLY TO MARY HANSEN - 40
vs. 38 Yrs."
Dear Mary,
In
reply to your letter at http://www.fivedoves.com/letters/jan2005/maryh128.htm
the Israelites crossed over the Jordan on the 10th day of the first month,
which is Nisan, at the beginning of the 41st year after they left Egypt.
In the 40th year, in the eleventh month, on the 1st day of the month Moses
was still alive, and the Israelites didn't cross the Jordan until the 10th
day of the first month which was after Moses died. So it had to be
in the beginning of 41st year after they left Egypt that they crossed the
Jordan because according to Exodus 12:2 the month of Passover then became
the beginning of the months or the first month of the year. Please
read the following verses:
Deuteronomy
1:1-8, "These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this
side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea,
between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab. (There
are eleven days journey from Horeb by the weay of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea.)
And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on
the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of
Israel, according unto all that the Lord had given him in commandment
unto them; After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt
in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei;
On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this
law, saying, The Lord our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have
dwelt long enough in this mount: Turn you, and take your journey and
go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto
in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the
sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon,
unto the great river, the river Euphrates. Behold, I have set the
land before you: go in and possess the land which the Lord sware unto your
fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed
after them."
Then
we see the death of Moses in Deuteronomy 34:5-8 which says, "So Moses the
servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word
of the Lord. And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over
against Beth-peor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.
And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was
not dim, nor his natural force abated. And the children of Israel wept
for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days: so the days of weeping
and mourning for Moses were ended."
Joshua
1:1-4 says, "Now after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord it came
to pass, that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister,
saying, Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this
Jordan, thou, and all this people unto the land which I do give to
them, even to the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of
your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto
Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river,
the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea
toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast."
Then
skipping down to Joshua 1:10-11 which says, "Then Joshua commanded the
officers of the people saying, Pass through the host, and command the people,
saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over
the Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the Lord your God giveth
you to possess it." Joshua 3:1-7 says, "And Joshua rose early in
the morning; and they removed from Shit-tim, and came to Jordan, he and
all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over.
And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through
the host; And they commanded the people saying, When ye see the ark of
the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests the Levites bearing
it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it. Yet there
shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure:
come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for
ye have not passed this way heretofore. And Joshua said unto the
people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the Lord will do wonders
among you." Verses 16 & 17 show us how the Jordan River was
miraculously parted so that the people crossed over on dry ground in the
Jordan River. Then if we skip down to Joshua 4:19, it says, "And
the people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first
month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho."
Since the Jewish year began on the 1st day of the first month, the tenth
day of the first month fell at the beginning of the 41st year after the
Israelites left Egypt. And if you were to add 41 yrs. to 1967, that
brings us to the year 2008.
God
bless,
Donna
