I read in Revelation 4:6 that before God's throne there was a "sea of glass like unto crystal".  I believe this "sea" is our inability to reach the throne of God in this sinful age.  After the completion of God's plan of redemption, I think this "sea" will be removed in the new heaven and new earth at the end of time.  It is after the restoration of all creation when there will be no more barrier between God and all the redeemed.  This is why the all the first creation were passed away, and that "sea" of separation is forever removed.
