From Genesis to Revelation the bible is filled with examples of God speaking to man thru dreams and visions, God did not change. He promised to speak this same way to future generations when he poured out his Holy Spirit at Pentecost.  The problem is that some have gone way to far in discounting them because the devil does mimic the real. However we do not throw the baby out with the bath water. Do not discount this powerful way in which God tries to communicate with us.
 
I had a very telling dream recently. I have been married 36 years. Menopause has visited us with all its strange and irrationally mood swings. In one difficult episode I was resigned to calling it quits. That night I had a brief vision. I saw my wife crossing a tight rope bridge across a swift river. Up stream from the bridge the river was fairly smooth and blue. Down stream from the bridge the water was totally white with raging rapids. I woke up and was quick to realize what this meant, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that God was warning me that it would be very difficult if we ended the marriage.
 
This is a personal vision but it could also be prophetic, a double implication. The rapture will happen suddenly, a narrow time of escape will appear. Prior to that things will be fairly peaceful. After that all hell will break loose. Do not discount your dreams my friend, God may be trying to instruct you.
